Growing up in the rural outskirts in Southern California in the 50’s/60’s, we had natural green space all around us.There certainly wasn’t the population that the area now supports, together with all the freeways, houses, retail, and offices buildings. This explosion of people and buildings brings the "need to develop Green Spaces" to the forefront of urban planning.
“an area of grass, trees, or other vegetation set apart for recreational or aesthetic purposes in an otherwise urban environment”
There are many reasons to support green spaces in our communities including:
Green Spaces enhance the beauty and the environmental quality of the neighborhood;
Tress, shrubs, and turf help to improve air quality — by helping to remove smoke, dust, and other pollutants from the air;
Large shrubs and trees aid in reducing heat buildup — planting trees in a parking lot can help to reduce on-site heat buildup, decrease runoff, and enhance night time cool downs;
All vegetation, living and dead, provide much needed habitat for bees, butterflies, birds, and others that our population growth displaces.
They promote awareness of the beauty of Nature and help to foster an appreciation for our environment
We currently live in the Washington DC metro area and are amazed at the number of green spaces in the metro region. Explore the Green Spaces around you and you’ll find they have much to offer. Many parks offer classes, art exhibitions, plants for sale; or maybe you're looking for simply some peace and serenity — a getaway from your hectic world.
